Reading the numbers

Start On the near long rail, outside it, 5 a diamond from the corner: 0 up to 40, read through the cue ball.

Aim On the far long rail, 10 a diamond from the corner: 0 up to 80.

Arrival Back on the near long rail, on the cloth side, 7 a diamond: 0, 7, 14, 21.

Step by step

  1. Choose the finish on the near long rail — where the cue ball comes back to meet the balls.
  2. Read the start through the cue ball along the line to your trial aim.
  3. Aim = Start − Finish: 30 − 14 = 16. Re-read and work it again.
  4. Add the table correction.

The stroke

No side, centre ball or a touch of follow, a firm medium stroke.
