Long–Long–Short (Effect)

Solved for side spin. The red stands on the far long rail and is hit about half-ball with a little follow; the cue ball goes long rail, long rail, short rail and comes back up to finish on the far long rail. Aim is where the red stands, finish is where the ball returns, start is read on the near long rail from its middle.

FormulaEffect = Finish + Aim − Start + table correction

Reading the numbers

Start On the near long rail from its middle, 1 a diamond: 0 at the middle up to 4 in the corner. Read it on the line through the cue ball's contact with the red.

Aim Where the red stands on the far long rail, 1 a diamond from the corner.

Arrival Where the cue ball must finish, back on the far long rail after four cushions, on the same scale.

Step by step

  1. Read the three numbers.
  2. Effect = Finish + Aim − Start: 1 + 3 − 3 = 1 tip of running side.
  3. Add the table correction, then set that many tips — 4 is as far out as the cue ball takes.

The stroke

About a half-ball hit on the red, a little follow and a firm stroke — the ball travels four rails.
