Distance Equals Aim

Bank shot off the short rail with running side: short rail, far long rail, then the near long rail before either ball. Count the diamonds between where the start line meets the near long rail and where the ball must finish on it — that distance is the aim on the short rail.

FormulaAim = Finish − Start (distance) + table correction

Reading the numbers

Start On the near long rail, 1 a diamond: where the line to the aim, through the cue ball, meets that rail.

Aim On the first cushion, the short rail: 9, 7, 5, 3, 1 on its diamonds — 2 a diamond.

Arrival On the near long rail again, 1 a diamond: where the cue ball must come back to.

Step by step

  1. Find the start and the finish on the near long rail.
  2. Count the diamonds between them: that distance is the aim.
  3. Aim = Finish − Start: from 3 to 6 is a distance of 3, so aim at 3.
  4. Add the table correction.

The stroke

Two tips of running side, centre height or a touch of follow, medium speed.
