Long–Short–Long 024

Solved for side spin. The red stands on the far long rail and is hit half-ball; the cue ball goes long rail, short rail, long rail. Aim is where the red stands (0, 2, 4 at the second, third and fourth diamonds), start and finish are read on the near long rail, and Space is how far the red stands off its rail, which takes effect away.

FormulaEffect = Finish + Aim + Start − Space + table correction

Reading the numbers

Start On the near long rail from its middle: 4 at the middle down to 0 in the corner.

Aim Where the red stands on the far long rail: 0, 2 and 4 at the second, third and fourth diamonds, half steps between.

Arrival On the near long rail from the corner: 0, 2, 3, 4, 6.

Space How far the red stands off its rail, read on the short rail: 0 against the cushion, 1 a diamond out, 2 two.

Step by step

  1. Read start, aim, finish and space.
  2. Effect = Finish + Aim + Start − Space: 3 + 0 + 1 − 0 = 4 tips of running side.
  3. The further the red stands off its rail, the less side the shot wants — that is why space is taken away.
  4. Add the table correction and set the side.

The stroke

A half-ball hit, centre height, firm stroke, running side.
